Some Of Oklahoma's Own Create Social Network For Football Coaches
One of Oklahoma's own is working on a way to connect football coaches around the world.
TULSA, Oklahoma- Blake Smith is a college graduate looking for a job. But this former Union High Redskin and Colorado State Ram wants to be a football coach. He's currently a graduate assistant at the University of Tulsa, but he found it hard to get his name out and move up the coaching ladder. "I was frustrated with job opportunities and the way that coaches network and the way you get jobs," Smith said.
So he and his brother, Dexter, had an idea: They started a social networking web site for football coaches. It's called The Football Office. It launched mid-June and already has members from 48 states and 5 different countries. "We have guys from all over the country—guys from Penn State, Florida State, Kansas State," Blake said.
"We want to be able to connect people that maybe don't have the clout, as you will, in professional football, be it college, high school—guys that are just getting in.
The site allows coaches, trainers, or anyone working with high school football players and older, to create a profile. It's similar to Facebook or Linked In. It also features live clinics, to pass on tips, and a job board for high school coaches to connect with potential employers around the country. Dexter Smith said, "We want to be able to connect people that maybe don't have the clout, as you will, in professional football, be it college, high school—guys that are just getting in. And we want to be able to connect some of the younger guys.
The connections seem to be working. Three weeks after the launch and the site has already had half-a-million page views and averages more than 10,000 hits a day. The brothers are proud of what they've accomplished, so far, and hope this is only the beginning. "Hopefully, a year from now, we have 10,000 coaches on here, and we're the premiere football networking site for coaches," Dexter said.
The Smith brothers are focusing on football, for now, but said there are plans for similar web sites that target other occupations, like the oil and gas industry.
